Cayman Islands’ athletes perform on two continents

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Cayman’s own Cydonie Mothersill claimed second
place in the women’s 200 metres at the Bislett
Games in Oslo, Norway.

Cydonie Mothersill placed second in the women’s 200 metres at the Bislett Games in Stockholm, Sweden on Friday 2 June. Her time of 22.87 seconds gave her the runner-up spot behind Kim Gaevert of Belgium, who had to run a season’s best of 22.58 seconds to beat Mothersill.

Mothersill will be in action again in Lille, France, on Friday 9 June as she fights to improve on her fourth place world ranking in the women’s 200 metres.

Omar Wright of Rice University will be participating in the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, which will take place from 7 to 10 June at Sacramento State University in California.

Wright tied for eighth place in the Mid West Regional Championships with a clearance of 6’11”/2.11 meters. With the top five performers at each Regional automatically qualify for Nationals, Wright looked set to go home disappointed.

However, a number of at-large invitations are awarded to persons who have achieved outstanding results during the season in addition to the five automatic qualification slots from the Regionals.

With the tenth best clearance for a Division I competitor this season, Wright received an invitation to Nationals. The invitation was based on his 2.19 metres/7’2 1/4” clearance at the Conference USA Championships, which tied the Rice University record, and upped his own Cayman Islands national record.

He is scheduled to compete in the preliminaries on Friday, 9 June, when he will attempt to qualify for Saturday’s finals.
