Tracking the storms with Digicel

Thursday, June 8, 2006

Chief Executive Officer,
JD Buckley

Following the start of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season on 1 June, Digicel said it is providing complimentary hurricane tracking maps at all its locations. The large scale tracking map also includes general hurricane information and tips on what to do before, during and after a hurricane.

In order to track a hurricane on the map, customers should monitor local news for the latest weather advisories and look out for information on hurricane positions which are given by latitude and longitude. Customers should then record the storm centre position, date and time on the tracking map.  As the storm proceeds the points should then be joined together to form the storm track.

The firm said that to help its customers stay in touch during the hurricane season it is also offering a hurricane package throughout.
At any Digicel store, customers may purchase a Nokia 1108 for just $49 and also receive a free car charger.

The Nokia 1108 is designed to weather any storm and includes a built in flashlight, up to 4.5 hours talk time, up to 400 hours standby time, sturdy casing and a large screen display.

"Digicel has been working diligently to make sure that our customers can stay in touch with friends and family locally and overseas in any weather," said JD Buckley, CEO Digicel Cayman.

"We've protected our network sites, increased capacity and upgraded back-up systems throughout our 3-island network in the Cayman Islands.  We have our business continuity plan in place and have a dedicated Crisis Management Team tasked with preparing for a storm strike, and spearheading recovery afterwards.

"As soon as a storm is identified as a potential threat, the Crisis Management Team (CMT) is mobilized to monitor and track the storm's progress. This is all in an effort to ensure that all areas of Digicel's operations are secured."
