Deloitte Sevens promises feast of rugby

Friday, June 9, 2006

Going for the ball in the lineout.

The annual Deloitte Cayman Sevens international rugby tournament kicks off at the Truman Bodden Stadium on Friday 9 June.

With top international sevens teams, as well as the best local sevens players, taking part, the event promises to bring top class sevens rugby to the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Friday 9 June and Saturday 10 June.

The twelve teams participating in the event have been split into three groups, with Samurai, Nova, Spanish Viators, and West Indies making up Pool A; Fiji Barbarians, Royal Navy, Cayman President's VII, and Jamaica making up Pool B; and Marauders, Susies Exiles, Canadian Druids, and JRL Nomads making up Pool C.

The pool phase will kick off at 3:30 pm on Friday 9 June, with play continuing late into the night.

Saturday 10 June will kick off at 3:30 pm with new pools, based on the results of Friday's play.

The winners of Pools A and C from Friday, as well as the runner-up in Pool B, will compete in Cup Pool 1. The winner of Pool B, as well as the runners-up from Pool A and C will compete in Cup Pool B.

After a round of round robin pool play, the winner of Cup Pool 1 will face the runner-up of Cup Pool 2 in the first semi-final, with the winner of Cup Pool 2 facing the runner-up of Cup Pool 1 in the second semi final, with the two winners progressing to the Cup Final.

The teams that fail to make it into the top two during the initial pool phase on Friday will go on to play in the plate competition.

If the top-class field, including some of the very best sevens players in the world, is anything to go by, the event should get even the most jaded rugby fans on their feet and cheering, as well as winning the sport a legion of new fans.
