Car rental service celebrates business milestone
Monday, June 19, 2006
Steve Foster, Hank Jackson and Lee Foster of Cico Rent-A-Car were celebrating 40 years in the business, at the Wharf Restaurant last week. Having started here in the early days of the tourist sector, it was soon apparent that the country's growing tourism sector would need a reliable car rental service.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Cico Rent-A-Car here in the Cayman Islands, the company held a special celebration at the Wharf Restaurant in George Town, on Thursday, 15 June.
Cico's management stated: "First and foremost, we thank God, our customers, our great employees, our bankers and friends who have made Cico rent-a-car a success and the pre-eminent car rental company in the Cayman Islands for 40 years."
During the birth of Cayman's tourism industry boom, Cico recognized the need for reliable transportation for tourists. They have been successfully serving that need ever since.
Woodrow Foster, cousin to Foster Brothers David and Steve, established Coral Investment Company (Cico) in 1965. In 1996 Foster Brothers Ltd purchased Cico from Woodrow Foster and set up company headquarters at the Beach Club Colony, the official birthplace of Cico Rent-A-Car.
In the early days, the company's fleet of vehicles consisted of twelve cars altogether, a collection of Mini Mokes and Volkeswagen Beetles.
In 1973 the company introduced Fiats, Austin Minors and the British version of Ford Escorts to meet Cayman's growing need for tourist transport.
Three years later, Honda Civics, AMC Concords, as well as Pacers, CJ-5's CJ's and Jeeps were added to the fleet.
In 1972 Cico became an Avis franchise. Hank Jackson also became an employee of the company in 1972, and is still there; one of Cico's longest serving staff members.
Continuing in the Foster family tradition, Steve Foster's son, Lee, took over the position of Cico's Managing Director in 1994, after Steve Foster retired.
