Kiwanis get behind after-school programme
Thursday, June 22, 2006
Key clubbers promote Caymanian products while attending a convention in the US.
George Town Primary School recently received a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman in support of their breakfast and after-school care programme, which helps children who come to school with no breakfast.
The funds provided will go towards providing a healthy and substantial morning meal for them.
Principal Marie Martin thanked the Kiwanis Club for providing the funds to help with the after-school care programme.
This programme is on-ongoing community service project of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman and it is hoped to be able to provide a similar programme in some of the other Primary Schools on the Island with funds raised from generous public donations.
Meanwhile earlier this year 45 Key Clubbers from St. Ignatius Catholic School, Triple C School, John Gray High School and Cayman Prep. & High School went on a four-day trip to Orlando for their Annual Florida District Key Club Convention.
Key Clubs are part of the Kiwanis family of service clubs and offer the high school students the opportunity to do social services like visiting the Pines Retirement Home, doing beach clean-ups, raising funds to prevent girls in Africa from getting AIDS and other charitable works.
At the same time it helps the students develop leadership skills.
At the Convention in Orlando the young people met with over 1,000 other students from Florida, elected the new District Board and installed the new Lieutenant Governors.
The four Cayman Key Clubs also organized a very successful workshop, which was attended by more than 80 Florida students.
The workshop promoted the Cayman culture and Caymanian products.
The convention marks the beginning of a new club year and all students returned to Cayman with lots of inspiration for making another very successful Key Club year.
The High School Key Clubs are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman.
