Women's Indoor Football League kicks off

Thursday, June 22, 2006

Budget and RC Panthers contest possession.

The Women's Five-a-Side Indoor Football League, sponsored by Digicel and Hard Rock, kicked off on Friday 16 June at King's Sport Centre to great acclaim from players and fans alike.

The action was kicked off by Scott's Marine, under captain Shakeina Bush, who took on KPMG in the first match in Division 1.

Scott's Marine dominated the match from start to finish, with Sasha Barnes leading the way for the team with a double, and Judy Rivers and Justina Harlstone each contributing a goal. KPMG could not breach Scott's Marine's final line of defence once during the match, giving Scott's Marine a 4-0 victory, and setting them up as one of the early favourites in the league.

In the second Division 1 match of the league, Butterfield Bank took on Elite, who certainly showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with as the league progresses.

Elite displayed excellent skill throughout the team to claim a very impressive 8-2 victory over Butterfield Bank. Denise Duncan led the way for Elite with a hat trick, with Michelle McField, Martha Godet, Sue Nixon, Antoinette Thompson, and Zoenief Walker adding a goal each. Meisha Gordon and Sandra McLean scored for Butterfield Bank, trying valiantly to keep their team in contention, but to no avail.

On Sunday 18 June, Division 2 kicked off with Ritz Carlton Panthers taking on Budget. Panthers brought along a mass of supporters, whose cheering carried the team to a well-deserved 2-0 victory. Mallely Cruz and Trish Fleming found the back of the net for RC Panthers, with Budget unable to make any reply.

The second Division 2 match, between Caledonian and Kickers, turned out to be the closest match of the league so far, as the teams fought it out to the very end. At the final whistle, it was Kickers claiming it by a narrow 2-1 margin over Caledonian.

Joyce Follows and Cindy Downing scored for Kickers, with Tonia Ebanks scoring the lone goal for Caledonian.

Division 2 action will continue on Friday 23 June, when RC Panthers take on Caledonian at 6:30 pm, with Budget going up against Kickers at 7:30 pm.

In Division 1, week one's winners will manage to avoid one another for one more week, as Scott's Marine takes on Butterfield Bank at 6:30 pm, and Elite faces KPMG at 7:30 pm.
