Charity cycle ride for Cancer Society
Friday, June 23, 2006
Steve Evans is one of the favourites for the win on Sunday.
On Sunday 25 June, Butterfield Bank will present a charity cycle ride with the aim of raising funds for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
The ride will start from Paradise Bar and Grill, with the route taking participants down South Sound Road to the turnaround point just before the Grand Harbour roundabout.
From there, participants will make their way back to the finish at Paradise.
There is no entry fee as such, but a minimum donation of $10 to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society is required. These donations will be collected at registration. Presenting sponsor Butterfield Bank had undertaken to match dollar for dollar the amount raised for the cancer society on the day, and in so doing the organisers hope to collect a tidy sum.
All participants who ride the course will be eligible to win a Cayman Airways flight to Miami in the post-ride prize draw.
The competitive part of the ride will be run in the form of a time trial, with riders going off at one-minute intervals from the 7:00 am start time. In order to keep things running smoothly, race organiser Steve Evans urges all riders interested in racing to be there early so that they can be sent off first, avoiding faster riders having to make their way past social participants. The social riders will set of slightly later, but are asked to also be at ready for a 7:00 am start.
Although certainly rules will apply to the racing group, all other participants are free to do the course at their leisure, enjoying the scenery and low traffic volume.
With the 2005 winner of the women's race, Alison O'Hare, no longer on Cayman, and the defending men's champion Eugene Bonthuys well out of shape, both divisions are certain to crown new champions. Race organiser Steve Evans is among the hot favourites for the men's race, with top cyclist Jerome Ameline and top triathlete David Walker also in the running.
For more information on the event, contact Steve Evans at 323 0946 or e-mail steve_evans1@mac.com.
The event is being run in association with Grand Cayman Cycling Club, Cayman Islands Triathlon Association, Cayman Islands Cycling Association, Revolutions Indoor Cycling and many other supporters.
The organisers urge all cyclists to come out and "Ride strong, ride fast, have fun, and raise cash for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society."
