Cable & Wireless was the host to the Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours event on Thursday 22 June, just outside their building at One Technology Square, George Town.

Cable & Wireless CEO Timothy Adam, used the opportunity to outline his company's achievements and said that the guests would be able to see firsthand the significant investment Cable & Wireless had made to telecommunications infrastructure in the Cayman Islands, during a guided tour of the Cable & Wireless building.

Topically, as the hurricane season has arrived, Mr Adam used the occasion to confirm his company's commitment to the Islands in case of emergency.

"One Technology Square is the newest of two purpose-built structures that Cable & wireless designed and commissioned to house critical equipment and functions to securely withstand Category Five hurricane force winds at speeds in excess of 200 Miles per hour," he stated.

"At Cable & Wireless our commitment is simple: We are prepared; we are secure; we are reliable," he continued.

Mr Adam explained that Cable & Wireless was the business community's partner, because businesses were about relationships and communication, and that his company's preparedness would facilitate their company's preparedness in the event of such a crisis.

Expanding on his theme of preparedness, Mr Adam explained that Cable & Wireless had already proved its capability, as during Hurricane Ivan One Technology Square was the building that accommodated the 911 Emergency Communications Team, that continued to operate throughout the storm, and for the following weeks.

Mr Adam also explained that Cable & Wireless was reliable during an emergency because of multiple backup power supplies for their equipment.

"We have a backup to the backup to the backup to the backup...and none of those backups is on the ground floor where flooding might be at risk, even though our ground floor was well above the waters of Hurricane Ivan," he said.

Mr Adam went on to build on his theme of communications reliability for outlining the different products and services provided by Cable & Wireless: "Cable & Wireless provides customers with a broad range of resilient solutions that span the full spectrum of telecommunication technologies," he said.

Cable & Wireless were still the only provider of hard-wired fixed lines here, he said, as well as providers of wireless systems; mobile voice and data technology, and local and international voice, internet, data and mobile services.

"Cable & Wireless prepaid mobile customers can roam across the Cable & Wireless Caribbean as well as the USA, with the UK and other countries to be added shortly," he added.

Mr Adam finished his speech by inviting guests to look around the building, to see the facilities for themselves.

Following on from Mr Adam, Nancy Kirkconnell-Ewing, President of Brac Informatics Centre, (BIC) spoke about her company's commitment to communication technology.

A provider of international e-business services, BIC was founded to create sources of economic growth for the Cayman Islands, and is an international service provider of disaster recovery solutions and customer service portals.

Ms Kirkconnell-Ewing used the opportunity to highlight mobileCONNECT technology, which, in partnership with Cable & Wireless, is being used as the 'backbone' for crisis communication.

There was a dramatic demonstration of the new technology given during the evening as many different guests simultaneously received the same text message sent by one person. The new technology also allows the receivers of the message to reply.
