Last chance for esteemed scholarship

Thursday, June 29, 2006

Huw Moses,
the Managing Partner of
Appleby Spurling Hunter
who said the scholarship is
an incredible opportunity

There is only one more day remaining for students who would like to apply for the Appleby Spurling Hunter prestigious 'Legal Education Scholarship'.

Providing an incredible opportunity for young Caymanians to study law at the Cayman Islands Law School, or an approved overseas university, the scholarship can also lead to work at Appleby which has employed many of the past scholarship recipients.

With financial assistance, specialised in-house training and guidance from the group's global offshore team and in-house training begining with a summer placement working directly with attorneys in a variety of practice areas, the scholarship offers a first class start for a career in law.

The placement also includes the opportunity to attend numerous in-house seminars led by senior attorneys, access to the group's extensive law library and on-line databanks, networking opportunities and summer social events.

Upon completion of their degree and being offered the position of Articled Clerk, recipients will have access to some of the best legal minds during a structured training program that lasts for 18 months.

Appleby said it is one of the few organisations on the Island that has a dedicated training department and facilities that assist in the delivery of a wide range of training courses for scholarship recipients and employees.

The scholarship program has proved to be an enormous success for past recipients, with the majority still working with Appleby and having built extremely successful careers in their chosen fields of expertise.

Nick Joseph and Bryan Hunter are two such examples. Bryan is a Partner and the Leader of the Insurance team, as well as Deputy Team Leader of the Funds and Investment Services team. Nick is also a Partner and Leader of the General Litigation team at Appleby. He enjoys the 'family feel' that Appleby has managed to retain from its small firm roots, making it a welcoming and encouraging environment to build a career within.

A more recent recipient of the Appleby scholarship is Caroline McCann, who was admitted to the Cayman Islands Bar in June 2006, and has since joined the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group at Appleby.

She made the comment that her studies were easier after having had on-ground experience through her summer placement. Caroline also found the ongoing guidance and assistance from attorneys within Appleby to be invaluable to her studies, and in deciding what areas of practice to specialise in.

Other successful scholarship recipients are too numerous to profile, but include Anne Foster and Andre Ebanks who were both admitted to the Cayman Islands Bar this year.

Appleby also has a number of recipients still in law school or completing training overseas, including Chanda Glidden, Christine Bodden, Charmaine Richter, Liesl Richter and Tara Rivers.

"Our legal education scholarship program provides an incredible opportunity for young Caymanians to study law here or abroad and to gain the highest level of skill and expertise from our global offshore team," said Huw Moses, the Managing Partner of Appleby Spurling Hunter.

"Those who have gone through the program and are working with us today are fine examples of what we demand from the program, and are all integral members of our various Practice Groups".

Application must be submitted by Friday 30 June to the Human Resources Manager, Appleby Spurling Hunter, Clifton House, 75 Fort St, PO Box 190 GT, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Tel 345 949 4900, Fax 345 949 4901 or email
