LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Cayman is facing a very uncertain future
Thursday, June 29, 2006
Dear Sir:
The Cayman Islands are facing a very uncertain future, if the offshore companies cannot recruit and retain, not only the specialist staff they need, but the support staff as well, they will move their business to another jurisdiction. As has been noted for the longest time now, we therefore do not think that opening our big mouths is going to change too much either.
This can and will be the straw that broke the camel's back and even though there is ridicule, disagreement, disgust and among other things, the Government is not about to listen to any advice or complaints because the thing called pride, and to sum it all up stupidity will not allow them to listen.
A perfect example is the roundabouts in the Islands. Well, on that one I need to ask a question, "Where is Mr Road Planner's head?" Yes, we have and will see more dramatic situations where there will be more absurd policies, more hemorrhage, and a greater exodus of people from the Cayman Islands and more goodbyes to future developments that may have come to the Islands.
The statement of the statistics office's recent claim that living costs are coming down, is a propaganda statement and most people are fully aware that very few things here are reducing in price, most are increasing. And even where there is a slight downturn in certain prices, the fact that most things had risen post-Hurricane Ivan to such a prohibitive level, any decrease now, to be meaningful would have to be substantial, yes and very substantial.
These absurd policies and the current cost of living are making the Cayman Islands very unattractive to many. It will really help if there was a few good thinking heads to put in place of those that are so-called running the country. Well, when? Where? How? They are the million dollar questions that are left to be answered.
I do think that we all will learn after the facts have been proven. Just hang on to your seats and things will come to those who wait.
