Rock music station hits the air today
Friday, June 30, 2006
Rock bands like Green Day will be a regular feature on Cayman's latest radio station Cayrock which launches 30 June.
STYLE FM has been rechristened as Cayrock 96.5 FM by its new owners dms Broadcasting and will begin broadcasting in a new rock music format from Friday 30 June.
A fortnight ago Style FM's licence was granted to dms Broadcasting to seal an acquisition deal with its previous owners, which included popular entertainer Dave Martins.
Management of the station said the change from a predominantly Caribbean format to purely rock music would cater to the diverse Cayman Islands' population.
With Cayrock FM, dms Broadcasting has taken its tally of stations to four, adding to its Hot 104.1 FM, Kiss 106.1 FM and X107.1 FM - all catering to different audiences.
Operations Manager of dms Broadcasting Steve Jones said the new entity would fill a musical void in the Islands.
"There's a real demand for rock music on the Island, which hasn't been catered to. I think listeners are going to be really excited about the new station, 10,000 songs in row, and the upcoming shows and air personalities," he said.
Cayrock promises old classics to the most popular hits of today including Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Green Day, Aerosmith, Collective Soul, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Rolling Stones, Tragically Hip and U2.
To launch the new station the company has enlisted local rock band Ratskyn to play at the Hard Rock Cafˇ in George Town on Friday night from 6:00.
"We look forward to celebrating the launch with everyone at the Hard Rock Cafˇ," Mr Jones said.
Hurley's Entertainment, a direct competitor to the dms Broadcasting Company, is expected to launch a brand new 103.1 FM station soon.
The public has not yet been informed about the name and format of the station, which recently acquired its licence from the Information & Communications Technology Authority.
Other stations operated on Grand Cayman by Hurley's Entertainment are Rooster 101.9 FM and Z99.9 FM.
Two gospel organisations are reported to be seeking licences to broadcast in the Islands, which is home to 17 radio stations.
