Opinion: The power of women
Friday, July 7, 2006
Somehow, a quiet revolution has been taking place and clubs that were once male bastions, have become feminized.
Since the recent induction of the President of the Rotary Club of Cayman Brac, all the service clubs on Cayman Brac are currently headed by women.
Rotary President Sandra Solomon is the second woman to head the Brac Club; the first was Lauriese Ashman during the 2004/2005 year, just a year after women were allowed to join for the first time.
Meanwhile, the Lions Club of Cayman Brac not only has their first woman President – Pierre-Ann Brown – but the Leos Club of Cayman Brac also has an all-female Executive under President Staci Scott.
The Business and Professional Women’s Club President Claudette Upton is, naturally, a woman by definition, but then, the Brac chapter of the Red Cross Coordinator is also female, with this post ably held by Kathy Kirkconnell.
For whatever reason, this seems to be the year of the Woman in the Sister Islands, making it possible to draw on the particular strengths of women. This would, of course, include the feminine ability to dismiss rivalry and build bridges between the clubs.
If ever there was a time when they could join forces to tackle one major task for the betterment of these Islands, this is surely now, while the particular strengths of men take a back row in the service of the Brac and Little Cayman.
Perhaps the clubs could take on a moral or social cause rather than a costly endeavour and, by singing the same song, bring about some major improvement to our community.
