Petrol price signs are possible
Monday, July 17, 2006
The Government has now declared that it is working out strategies to ensure that Cayman residents are being dealt with fairly in relation to fuel prices and, one of the first points of focus has been the need for signs at petrol stations displaying prices of fuels.
Fuel prices in Cayman have been much higher than in the United States, and in some other countries, for some time now, and rallying cries against this have been heard from local sector groups, and residents in general, for a long time.
There have even been calls for the Government to step in to the industry - one that does not have to conform to any Government regulations.
However, speaking at a post-Cabinet Media Briefing on 14 July 2006, Leader of Government Business, Honourable Kurt Tibbetts admitted that in examining the fuel-costs issue in the past, Government's concentration had been on the bulk distributors.
But now, Mr Tibbetts said that the country's leadership was giving consideration to the role retailers play in petrol price levels on the Island.
He said that should retailers be compelled to display per-gallon prices, the wide variation in charges throughout the Island could be addressed.
Mr Tibbetts also said that in relation to price signs at stations, the Government was now considering avoiding "gaudy signs with neon lights" and whether new legislation or new regulations would be needed to establish signs as a requirement.
