Watersports and chili mix up for charity

Lots of people turned up to give a new watesrport a go.


Held at Royal Palms on Saturday 1 July the Wet Fest/Chili Cook-off 2006 was all about encouraging locals and residents to tke part in some watersports as well as eating chili and raising cash for a good cause.

The fundraising event organised by the Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA), offered various wet activities at unbelievably discounted prices, from between $5 to $20.

Sports on offer included diving for certified divers, kayaking, sailing, banana boat and wave runner rides, aqua cycles and parasailing.

 There were also a variety of beach activities, including soccer kick-off competitions and a bouncy castle. Paid admission included a raffle ticket to win a wonderful, free weekend getaway to Little Cayman Beach Resort for a family of four with airfare provided by Cayman Airways!

With Z99.9 and Rooster 101 on hand providing entertainment and the World Cup semi-final matches playing on the plasma screen the day proved to truly have something for everyone.

Free chili tasting topped off  event with the Chili Cook-Off Competition which was open to anyone wishing to enter a team and cook up their best chili for everyone attending to taste.

The winning team, entered by Red Sail Sports, will be sent to the International Chili Cook off contest in Omaha, Nebraska later this year.

In the event that the 1st place team cannot make the trip then the 2nd place team, Z99/Rooster, will be sent in their place.

1 July also saw the start of advance ticket sales for this year's "Taste of Cayman", which boasts the chance to win this year's Taste of Cayman Grand prize - a 2007 Fire Opal SLK Roaster with folding hardtop plus hot getaway prizes.

Wet Fest is a community service event that allows everyone to take part in the fun in, on and under the water that CITA members offer year round. The 2006 Wet Fest/Chili Cook-off was sponsored by Z-99/Radio Cayman (exclusive radio sponsors), Cayman Net News, Caymanian Compass, Royal Palms Beach Club, Hews Janitorial Services, Haagen-Dazs, Gatorade, Little Cayman Beach Resort, Cayman Airways, Pepsi, AquaFina, Tortuga Rum Company, Topimex, Texaco, ESSO, Department of Environmental Health, Coke, Cayman Imports, Progressive Distributors, Tortuga Rum Company, Tower Marketing, Digital DeSign and Noah's Ark.

Proceeds from the event are used for a variety of community service projects including the Lighthouse School.
