The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) is a non-governmental organization.
TIDE's mission is to promote the sustainable development of the Toledo District by fostering the efficient and effective management of the region's resources, conducting relevant research, and by promoting training and advocacy in order to preserve our natural heritage for present and future generations.
Two of our many responsibilities are to manage, monitor and protect 160 square miles of marine reserve and five watersheds hosting the five of the largest rivers in the country which empty into the Port Honduras Marine Reserve (PHMR).
We realize the importance of our work since whatever negative impacts occurring in and around the areas we work would invariably, one way or the other, not only affect the Reserve but also the Barrier Reef.
Hopefully UNESCO will soon be voting on whether or not to declare the Belize Barrier Reef a World Heritage Site, thanks to the efforts of many environmental organizations in Belize and of course TIDE.
For more information on what we do at TIDE visit us at our web site at http://www.tidebelize.org/.
