Shaheed Mohamed |
As part of the Cayman Islands Stanford 20/20 cricket team, Shaheed Mohamed partnered Pearson Best through an innings that ensured victory over the Bahamas.
In his native Guyana cricket is the number one sport so he started playing the game aged 9, following a family tradition passed down from his Father and Uncles. He credits his success in the sport to the work of Annan Gollarran, Auditor General of Guyana and cricket team captain, and his Uncle, Ali Mudeen.
After playing youth cricket for Guyana, Shaheed came to the Cayman Islands in 2000 and soon found a place on the Cayman national team.
Shaheed has a wife and 17-month-old daughter. He says they have had to put up with numerous absences as the team travels to play abroad but his wife has a positive attitude and is very supportive.
He says the greatest achievement in life is to get a place on your national team and represent your country.
Looking back on the Stanford 20/20 Shaheed regards it very important to both himself and the whole Cayman team, with the crowds, the atmosphere and the TV coverage. It clearly represents the highest point in his cricketing career.
Asked about his outlook on life he said it important to be positive towards everything you do in life. He also spends time meditating and reflecting on God.
Shaheed's next challenge is the ICC Americas Tournament where Grand Cayman will take on Argentina for a place in the global cricketing community.
