Young swimmers make a big splash

The Brac's summer sports camps got off to a splashy start last week when 18 young Brackers improved their swimming skills under the careful guidance of instructor Paula Swaby.

A coach with the Department of Youth, Sports and District Administration, Ms Swaby was full of praise for the young swimmers, who ranged in age from five to 17.

"The kids were wonderful and great to teach," she said.

"By the end of the week we had everyone swimming from the Beginners group, and they all gained lots of confidence in the water. The Advanced group learned some new skills to add to their strokes. And we all had lots of fun."

Despite the fact that Monday's camp had to be cancelled because of a passing thunderstorm, the young Brackers spent the rest of the week in the water, said Mitchum Sanford, Brac Sports Instructor.

"I thought the camp was once again very successful. Paula does a great job and the children learn and enjoy themselves a whole lot," he said, adding that he, too, felt the youngest children ended the week "with new confidence, self-belief and much improvement."

The older children spent much of their time working on their technique and strokes, and also "learned a few new tricks and tips".

Mr Sanford thanked all who took part in the camp, especially Caitlin Connor, who provided the refreshments.

This week's sports camp (14 to 18 August) will focus on basketball, while the final week (21 to 25August) will be for football. Both camps will be held at Cayman Brac High School from 8:30 am to 12 noon. Registration is $10 for each camp.
