With the support of the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) three local swimmers have travelled to Canada to compete.

Brigitte Tomascik, Joel Rombough and Peter Stasiuk took part in the Canadian National Age Group Championship, an open meeting for competitors aged 12-18.

The event, held in Calgary, Alberta, is one of the largest the Cayman Islands has ever competed in with 998 swimmers in 112 teams taking part.

Each swimmer was entered in six pool events and a five-kilometre open water swim which took place in Sylvan Lake, north of Calgary.

In addition to all the normal demands of competitive swimming, Calgary is around 400 feet above sea level, requiring several days of acclimatization. The swimmers used this time to visit local attractions including one of the famous Calgary Stampedes.

During the competition Joel Rombough finished eighth in the 400 metres Individual Medley, ninth in the 200 metres Breaststroke and fifth in the Open Water swim.

Peter Stasiuk had personal best times in both the 400 metres Freestyle and 400 metres Individual Medley. He also placed sixth in both the 200 metres Breaststoke and the Open Water swim Brigitte Tomascik performed well in the 400 metres and 1500 metres Freestyle then took not only second place in her age group for the Open Water swim but placed third overall in this five kilometre event.

After the event Coach Alex Webb said the large number of competitors made for long days at the pool and, "With this in mind our swimmers did exceptionally well in both the pool and open water event."
