Cayman darts team in international competition

Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Taking their place in an international line up, the Cayman National Darts Team recently visited Barbados to compete for the Caribbean and America's Cups.

The America's Cup saw the Cayman team's best ever performance as they reached the quarterfinals.

Matched against the world-rated players in the Canadian team they fought to the last dart before bowing out of the competition. In the end Cayman players Douglas Stewart and Earl Smith placed tenth and twelfth out of 26 players. Eventual winners of the America's Cup, the USA, beat host country Barbados for the title.

In the Caribbean Cup competition, the Cayman team were unable to build on previous successes.

In the Mixed Triples Hank Ebanks, Douglas Stewart and Angela Mohammed reached the quarterfinal.

Consistent performances from the Mixed Doubles, Men's Singles and Men's Doubles players failed to dent the lead gained by eventual winners Trinidad.

In the team event Cayman beat host country Barbados and Brazil, both contests ending 8-4. They also drew 6-6 against Guyana and Belize.

Hank Ebanks was the Cayman MVP with 23 points, Earl Smith coming second with 16 points. In the female team Michelle Terry scored eight points and Angela Mohammed made seven points.

When the time came for the Professional Darts Corporation qualifier, several players were struck down by a virus but Earl Smith was still able to make it into the quarterfinals.
