Frank finally to bring 'Haven' home

Saturday, August 26, 2006

The much-anticipated premier of Frank Flowers' movie 'Haven' has been announced and the locally filmed picture will premier on 16 Septmber.

"It has been a very long road for us, and we are excited to finally be bringing this film to the world," said the Caymanian Director and writer of "Haven", Frank E. Flowers.

"This was my passion project and love song to the Island. We are dealing with a lot of issues in the film that are more prevalent now than ever before - especially in regards to the infiltration of gang culture and the tragedy of youth violence in these Islands. The premiere of this film will be done with the same spirit in which we made the picture, as we hope to involve the entire community and especially those who worked so hard, on every level, to make this a reality."

The film takes place over the course of a single weekend and features a prestigious ensemble cast including Bill Paxton, Orlando Bloom, Zoe Saldana, Victor Rasuk, Joy Bryant, as well as a host of local residents as featured performers and extras.

It chronicles the stories of a shady businessman (Bill Paxton) who flees to the Cayman Islands to avoid federal prosecution.

His story is juxtaposed against the love story between the characters played by Orlando Bloom and Zoe Saldana.

The premier weekend sponsored by Cable & Wireless in partnership with The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, Delta airlines and Red Stripe, is the firm said the next link in support of the production of this movie.

The first telecommunications company in the Cayman Islands began by donating much-appreciated phone services to the actors and crew during filming.

"We are very excited to host a special screening of "Haven" in the Cayman Islands. There was a lot of excitement here during filming, and lots of residents got involved," said Paul Taylor, VP Sales & Marketing Cable & Wireless Northern Area.

"We are delighted at the prospect of seeing the finished movie. Frankie who is a young Caymanian, has worked very hard to succeed in the extremely competitive movie industry and Cable & Wireless is proud to support his efforts."

The film was first aired at the Toronto film festival and its debut in Cayman has been anticipated since 2004.

When interviewed by Cayman Net News back in 2004 Mr Flowers was certain that his film would not add to the reputation the Cayman Islands gained after John Grisham's novel The Firm was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster with its portrayal of the Cayman Islands as a money-laundering haven.
"I think Haven is different," he said.

"The Firm was a film made by outsiders to the Island and the Firm utilised a sensationalised point of view.

"Haven is told from a Caymanian perspective, written and directed by a Caymanian, with Caymanians in many roles and on the crew.

"Sure, there are a lot of fictional elements to it, but 'The Firm' used the Cayman Islands as a backdrop.

With Haven, the entire community came out and supported it and it was shot completely in Cayman," said Mr Flowers.

Mr Flowers a former John Grey High School student majored in film at the University of Southern California and he also wrote and directed the short film 'Swallow' (2003) .
