Butterfield Bank's Monique Bush and Rhonda Serrano present $20,000 to triathlon Race Director Polly Cox and Treasurer Rodger Yeomans.
Announcing the 10th consecutive year in which Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited has sponsored the Cayman Islands International Triathlon, Rhonda Serrano, the bank's marketing officer, gave full backing to the event. "Supporting the community in health and sporting areas is one of our key corporate values, and we are thrilled to be a part of another season of Cayman's only triathlon. We would like to congratulate and commend the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association for organising such a spectacular event that we can all be proud of."
The 12th annual triathlon takes place on Sunday, 26 November starting near the Courtyard Marriott and Grape Tree Cafe. Competitors can choose either the Olympic or International Triathlon with a 1500 metre swim followed by a 40 km cycle race and a 10 km run or the Sprint distance event which involves a 750 metre swim, 20 km cycle race and a 5 km run.
According to the organisers, the time it takes to complete the course depends on experience, fitness and the physical and environmental conditions on race day. Basic equipment required for the event includes a sturdy pair of running shoes, swimming goggles, a bicycle and a regulation cycle helmet.
In addition to individual competitors, relay teams are being encouraged. This will allow athletes who are not confident about completing the entire course on their own, or are weak in one of the three disciplines, to share the event with others.
Build-Up Races for the main event are scheduled for 29 October 29 and 12 November. These over shorter distance to allow participants to practice transitions and pick up some race tips.
Race Director Polly Cox asked the public to be aware of the presence of competitors on the roads.
"An event such as this is very dynamic in nature and covers a lot of ground. We are extremely fortunate to have the RCIP and Special Constabulary supporting the event. Runners and cyclists will be advised to abide by normal rules of the road. However, we ask the general motoring public to please be careful if out and about the morning of Sunday, 26 November."
A traffic detour will be in place on West Bay Road to allow for participants' safe transitions between disciplines and the public are requested to slow down and be patient during the event's progress.
