Ban the sale of turtle meat and move on
Tuesday, October 24, 2006
Dear Sir:
Great news ("US Humane Society claims win for Cayman turtles"). I first traveled to Grand Cayman in 1974 when you could still purchase freshly slaughtered turtle meat in downtown George Town, from an open air market.
I have many local fishermen friends who were very disturbed by the ban on their turtle catching activities, and subsequent spear fishing ban, and I understand their heritage issues. However, the turtle industry was increasing with growth of tourism and no longer just for local consumption.
Although I too ate many a turtle stew, but the Turtle Farm was not the answer. The only true solution is to ban the sale of all turtle meat and move on.
I will miss eating turtle during the East End Bonfire, but guess I also like the oxtail stew.
