Reba Dilbert |
Local pageant organizer, Reba Dilbert sent a plea to the Cayman Islands to support her in hosting the Miss Cayman Global International, the local round of the International contest formerly known as Miss Commonwealth Beauty Pageant which has so far failed to attract enough contestants or sponsors.
This year Miss Global International will be held in Jamaica in May 2007. The global franchise is held by Lachu Ramchandani, and Ms Dilbert holds the franchise here in the Cayman Islands for Miss Cayman Global International.
During an interview with Cayman Net News, Ms Dilbert lamented over the fact that she is not receiving the kind of support that she needs from the community.
According to her, people ought to show more interest in the pageant since it sets the platform for young talented Caymanian women to reach the international stage.
She is of the opinion that the girls are not given the appropriate training and exposure that they need to win outside the Island.
For this reason, her goal is to set up a grooming school, to prepare Caymanian women for pageants.
She is also calling for sponsors. She stated that two sets of sponsors are needed - for the contestants, and for the pageant itself.
“We need sponsors to promote the event,” she said. The pageant is expected to be covered by the Caribbean’s newest and hottest TV station, Hype TV, and Scope Magazine, based in Jamaica.
“The pageant will be aired on Hype TV for a year,” added Ms Dilbert.
It will also be a boost to the Cayman economy as it is expected to attract perople from all walks of life.
“I have to invite international guests,” Ms Dilbert explained.
She said she also needs sponsorship for professional grooming and indicated that for the past years, the contestants have had to do their own grooming.
“This year, we are planning to have a professional groomer and we need money for that,” she added.
So far Ms Dilbert has recruited six contestants but needs 10.
Two of the contestants, Delisia Hernandez and Jenique Smith, threw their support behind Ms Dilbert.
“We have a lot of beautiful, talented young women in the Cayman Islands and we need something to showcase our talent, so we can actually get somewhere… Miss Cayman Global International can give us that,” Jenique said.
Her comment was supported by Delicia who said the contestants need professional grooming in order for them to meet and keep up with international standards.
“It is also a form of advertising our country and letting the world know what Cayman has to offer,” she added.
Ms Dilbert explained that this is the first pageant which presents an international opportunity for young Caymanian women. She has been involved in pageants for the past six years and has made a name for herself, especially in the area of costume designing.
Ms Dilbert has also won a few titles of her own including Best International Costume in Miss Bikini World (19 October 2002, Valetta, Malta); Best International Costume in the Miss Tourism World and Model of the Universe pageants (Ankara, Turkey, December 2003) and the Golden Apple Award for the World’s Best International Artist in Fashion Design Costume and Creativity (Moscow, Russia, 2004).
Miss Global International targets young women all over the world, between the ages of 17 and 26, who have the height, body, poise, awareness and personality.
