The team from Pedro Castle collect their prize at the Taste of Cayman
Winners of this year’s ‘Best Overall Turtle Dish’ at the Taste of Cayman competition, the staff at the Cafe at Pedro St James were reportedly reluctant entrants to the cook-off.
The chefs behind the traditional dish are Nancy Whittaker and Doreen Connor. They only agreed to enter the Taste competition, after much encouragement from staff and customers.
The competition took into consideration not only the taste and texture of the dish, but the presentation as well. It is here that the skills of Clinton Hunter, the events coordinator at Pedro St. James, came into action. And despite their initial hesitations the group came out victorious.
The Pedro Cafe serves its Turtle Stew every Friday and with a view that overlooks the bluff, it is said that you can’t get a bad seat in the house. It comes with traditional fixings such as White Rice, Cassava or Plantain and Potato Salad. And while the girls refuse to share the secret as to why their stew is so good, they agree to keep cooking it up by the pot full for everyone to enjoy.
The Tourism Attraction Board oversees the management of several of the Island’s attractions including Pedro St. James, and was thrilled to learn of the Cafe’s win and offered its congratulations and thanks to Nancy, Doreen and Clinton for all the hard work they put into showcasing and winning this important competition.
