This Christmas, families bonded together at the Family Life Centre

Friday, December 29, 2006

Many families spent the Christmas season together, having dinner, worshipping or spending quality time. Many are wishing for a stronger family bond, health and prosperity. A higly spirited performance was given by the Church of God Chapel Children’s Choir as they presented their musical ‘Miracle on Main Street, The Little Pageant that wouldn’t give up’ to an appreciative audience at the Family Life Centre on Sunday 17 December.

The presentation carried the audience along the journey with a group of children who were preparing to go caroling on Main Street, however, the ‘Governor’ was not in agreement, saying that the area was too ‘busy and the Manger scene was not ‘hip enough’. In addition he said that it was his re-election year and he was ‘busy’.

Even upon hearing this, the children were not discouraged and they went from door to door telling residents about their planned event.

One of those residents was the Governor’s daughter who eventually convinced him to let them go ahead with the event.

Throughout the night the children were energetic and enthusiastic during the renditions of the songs. The near capacity crowd was also treated to the sweat sounds of the Church of God Chapel’s Senior Sanctuary Choir which sang Christmas favourites such as ‘Joy to the World’, ‘Hark the Herald’, ‘Silent Night’ and ‘The First Noël’.

At one point during the performance, the Children’s and Senior choir came together and sang ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’.

There was also a rendition by Samantha and Ashley Mascarenhas who played the clarinet. A solo rendition by Milton Brown who sang ‘Mary did you know?’ helped to round out the evening of entertainment.

The production was directed by Carol Mascarenhas and created by Celeste Clydesdale.
Ms Mascarenhas indicated that she was happy with the night’s performance.

“Overall they did a really good job,” she said.

She was also pleased with the turnout, which she indicated was better than last years’ production. Ms Mascarenhas explained that while she was pleased with how the night went that the next performance would be even better and they would continue to practice hard.

Rehearsals and practice for this production, which consists of the members of the Children’s Choir, ranging from three years to thirteen years old began in September.

Ms Mascarenhas said that an important aspect brought out in the musical is that the children wanted to have Christ at the centre of Christmas, adding that in countries such as the US there are attempts by some to take Christ out of Christmas.

“The children wanted to share the joy of Christ with everyone,” she said,

For individuals who missed the first show or who would like to re-live the experience, there will be another performance on 7 January 2007 starting at 6:30 pm at the Family Life Centre.

Ms Mascarenhas said that she would like to thank everyone who assisted in the production. She also made special mention to Beverly Bernard, who did the choreography for the flag dancers and Corrine Glasgow, who did sign language for the song ‘Go Light your World’. She also thanked Pastor Alson Ebanks and Anthony Palmer who did the artwork for the set’s background as well as Phillip West who constructed the flats part of the stage background. In addition she thanked Angie Cato for helping with decorations as well as Celebrations.
