Students dressed up in their favourite storybook character.
It was quite an exciting day at the St Ignatius Catholic School on Wednesday, 31 January, as students were treated to some bananas and ice cream, to mark the end of the two-week “Go Bananas” reading programme.
According to Year 3 teacher, Wendi Hydes, the activity is aimed at getting students to enjoy reading.
“It has increased their level of enthusiasm, especially amongst Grade K students,” she said.
Ms Hydes noted that the students are always looking forward to this annual activity.
Meanwhile, Principal, Jennifer Paul-O’Donnell said, “The opportunity to get students enthused about reading is always exciting.”
The reading programme is organised by the school’s Librarian, Jacqueline Schoefield.
During that two-week period, the students participated in various educational activities such as art, dance and “Dress As Your Favourite Character” day.
That day was observed last Wednesday, 24 January, when the students dressed up in various costumes depicting their favourite storybook character. The teachers even participated.
This year, the students, from grade K through Year 6 read 1,728 books altogether.
Some of them received gift certificates bought from Hobbies and Books, as well as free books donated by All Fired Up.
