On Monday, 5 February, His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex presented bronze, silver and one gold award to 26 Duke of Edinburgh Award recipients.
In a ceremony attended by hundreds of family members and well-wishers on the lawn of Government House, the Earl spoke a special word of encouragement to each of the youthful participants as they marched on stage to receive their awards.
The awards are earned by young people who are involved in a range of physical and mental activities that prepare them to become good citizens, according to officials of the award scheme.
“You enjoyed the experience and seem enthused enough to go to the next level,” Prince Edward told the awardees.
He noted the large gathering and thanked all for their support and said to the young people, “It is because you achieved your awards that we are all here.”
Following the ceremony, Prince Edward mingled with the guests on the lawn and posed for a series of photographs before re-entering Government House for a fundraising dinner in support of the awards scheme.
Earlier in the day, after arriving from Cayman Brac, Prince Edward visited the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) where he met with young people and later unveiled a plaque at the site of a long-awaited marine base aimed at protecting Grand Cayman’s borders.
