Five-A-Side action marred by indiscipline

Tuesday, February 27, 2007

Deloitte challenge Coconut Joe’s for the kick

The first evening of last week’s indoor five-a-side play distinguished itself, not for the quality of play, but for the number of offences committed by players. During just four Division 1 games the referees recorded no less than 14 instances of unsportsmanlike conduct and three illegal tackles. In addition, the team Captain for Digicel, the league sponsors, received the red card for dissent.

Of the eight teams playing, only Campbell’s Welding emerged with a clean disciplinary record.

In the first game of the evening, Campbell’s Welding had a comfortable 5-1 win over PWC. The win was aided by PWC getting four yellow cards during the game. Scorers for Campbell’s were Melvin Williams, Paul Lamont, Glen Gray, Okieve Sutherland and team captain Deano Scott. Martin Waud got the goal for PWC.

Game two saw league sponsors Digicel retain their unbeaten record with a win over Pure Trouble, but not without some trouble of their own. On their way to a 4-3 victory, Digicel collected four yellow cards for unsportsmanlike conduct and had a player ‘Red Carded’ for dissent. Declan Cassidy got a hat trick for Digicel with Paul Foxton adding the fourth, two from Dwight Moxam and a single from Jared Yates made up the score for Pure Trouble.

In another eventful game, Maples & Calder added a win to their tally with a 4-3 result over the Cambridge All-Stars. Andre Morgan got all three goals for the All-Stars, Jeremy Seymour got two for Maples with Lee Ramoon and team captain Des Chisholm adding the rest.

Closing the night’s tally of goals and yellow cards, Androgroup scored their first win of the season over the still winless Butterfield Bank. The 3-2 result came from Androgroup’s Craig Hughes, David Grant and Kyle Santamaria with Gioser Acosta and Carlos Ebanks scoring for Butterfield.

On Tuesday evening, the opening game had two Division 2 teams emulating the antics of Monday’s Division 1 action.

A 2-2 draw between Deloitte and Coconut Joe’s ended with the score sheet showing two yellow cards for unsportsmanlike conduct and three red cards. Paul Njogu and Jeremy Mujela scored for Deloitte, George Kounnas and Bryan O’Donaghue for Coconut Joe’s.

Closing the evening, CIBC enjoyed a 6-1 victory over Caledonian in a clean and incident-free game. Dave McLaughlin got the goal for Caledonian. CIBC’s total came from a Michael Wilks hat trick plus one each from Kenneth Collins, Hugo Munoz and Trevor Mohammed.

The Thursday pairings started with Hadsohaltic Int facing Coconut Joe’s. Following the Tuesday evening excitement, Coconut Joe’s settled down to take the win 4-3 even though they gave Hadsohaltic a boost by putting the ball into their own net. Mark Randall got two for Coconut Joe’s with Joe Margison and Paul Kelly getting one each. Matt Hinds and Roland Thomas scored for Hadsohaltic.

Closing the week’s action, CIBC scored their second decisive victory with a 7-1 win over Deloitte. Michael Wilks and Trevor Mohammed each got a hat trick with Roderick Parchment rounding off the CIBC total. Paul Njogu scored for Deloitte.

At the end of the week, the King’s Sport Centre Athletic Director, Raymond Singh, sent a message to all the team representatives, in it he reminded them that the Five-A-Side leagues are a recreational programme. “When it’s all said and done, all of your players have careers that they need to attend to, and we don’t need anyone getting seriously injured. Let’s not also forget your sponsors that have put up a significant amount of money for your teams to play in this programme. Please notify those players that are repeat offenders of the aggressive offences to tone it down a notch. If not, I will be forced to step in and remove them from the programme,” he warned.

In the standings, Digicel have regained second place in Division 1 and are now hard on the heels of Admiral’s Bonanca Boyz. At the bottom of Division 1, Androgroup’s win gets their first points on the table but Butterfield Bank and CI Law School remain winless.

Michael Wilks is now overall top goal scorer with a total of 12 to his credit, Gareth Thacker heads Division 1 with eight.
In Division 2, CIBC rocketed up the table from fourth to first place, toppling Hadsphaltic in the process. Caledonian slip from second to fourth and Deloitte are still without a win.

This week is all Division 1 action. On Monday, 26 February at 7:00 pm, HMP met Butterfield Bank then, at 8:00 pm, the Cambridge All-Stars played Campbell’s Welding. The 9:00 pm pairing was Androgroup with Digicel and, at 10:00 pm, PWC were matched with Pure Trouble.

The Wednesday, 28 February pairings are KPMG and Admiral’s Bonaca Boyz at 7:00 pm, then the CML Claymores play the CUC Sparks at 8:00 pm and the 9:00 pm game matches the Ritz-Carlton Lions with CI Law School.
Full reports with the updated league table will appear next week only in Cayman Net News.
