Humane Society’s dog wash event hailed as successful

Friday, March 2, 2007

Dog owners attend dog wash in West Bay.

Organisers of the Cayman Islands Humane Society’s Sunday Dog Wash at the Hell Esso Station in West Bay said the event realised a “full house.”

The travelling team of volunteers scrubbed and brushed, clipped and snipped 71 dogs and puppies in the space of three and a half hours on the sunny Sunday morning.

According to the society, owners were thrilled with the results - shiny, sweet smelling canines to take home.

The dogs were also given de-wormers, brand new collars, dog licenses and treats.  Many owners took full advantage of booking their animals for spay or neuter surgery at the society’s new clinic, alongside donating some much needed funds to the charity.

The society said all the animals were inspected from head to toe and volunteers were advised on heartworm disease, coat care and grooming.

“This has to be one of our busiest dog washes to date,” said organiser Carolyn Parker.

“It is encouraging to see so many owners willing to give their free time and spend time with their pets here at the dog wash.  It definitely shows a caring attitude here in West Bay.”

A car hit a small pet while it was being escorted to the dog wash, marring what was generally a jovial atmosphere.

The owner said she and her two other dogs looked on in horror and disbelief as the driver allegedly stopped the vehicle and reversed over the poor creature.

Humane Society volunteers rushed to the scene but the animal was already dead.

“This is horrific.  This lady was attending the dog wash with her pets as she had very little water at home and needed our help to take care of her beloved dogs,” said Clare Hasart, from the Society’s Board of Directors.

“It is unbelievable that someone would deliberately hit an animal on purpose.  We encourage all dog owners to keep their pets safely on a leash when walking them; this incident happened on a quiet back road on a Sunday.”

The society advises motorists to call its office’s emergency number 326-1461 if an animal is accidentally hit by a vehicle.

The Humane Society Dog Wash is a regular event and visits various communities throughout Grand Cayman approximately every six weeks.

The event is opened to all dog and puppy owners.
