Billy Moffitt’s Bottoms Up dragster in action
The arrival of two supercharged, alcohol-burning dragsters from the USA signalled the start of the build-up to two weekends of action at Breakers Speedway.
The Bottoms Up dragster, driven by Billy Moffitt, features a supercharged, or blown, and fuel injected, rear-mounted 427 cubic inch Chevrolet engine.
Controlled Insanity, driven by Scott Kennedy, is the World’s quickest and fastest wheelstanding funny car. It uses a 468 cubic inch Chevrolet engine fitted with a BDS blower to power the car the entire length of the strip on its rear wheels.
Both cars will be running on the drag strip as part of family events to be staged at the raceway on 31 March and 7 April. The machines are designed to run the whole of the track on their rear wheels, passing across the finish line at speeds over 100 mph.
The two days start at midday, when the track will be open for a variety of driving displays, testing and other entertainment. At 6:00 pm the racing starts.
According to the track owner, Robert Campbell, the past weeks have seen a surge of activity as the top local cars are being prepared for these events. Some have requested private test sessions and an extra evening of general testing has been scheduled for Friday, 30 March.
The last evening of regular racing at Breakers on 24 March saw another good turn out with some fast times recorded.
Ian Tibbetts’ mighty Chevrolet Corvette comfortably topped the rear-wheel drive street legal cars at 7.338 seconds and 97.4 mph. This was over half a second quicker than the previous weekend, a clear indication that the car is really hooking up to the track surface as it leaves the line.
The Super Modified Chevrolet Chevelle of Ronnie Forbes again ran comfortably in the mid-sevens, recording a best of 7.643 seconds and 88.7 mph.
Fastest on four wheels was Neil Johnson in his Mitsubishi Evo V. The four-wheel drive powered the car to a best of 7.211 seconds and just over the magic ton at 100.4 mph.
In another demonstration of truck power, Jordan McLean took his Ford Lightning to 8.771 seconds with a speed of 80.5 mph.
Not far behind this was Simeon Markman in his front-wheel drive Honda Civic Type-R, which turned in a best of 8.999 seconds and 78.3 mph.
Best reaction time of the evening came from Arick Bodden in the Car City #28 Civic Type-R, he got off the line in 0.522 seconds.
Humberto Rives again headed the two-wheeled performers, ending the evening with a top ET of 6.722 seconds and 107.1 mph.
