Letter: Hopefully a true leader will emerge

Published on Wednesday, September 2, 2009Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir,

It would seem that your newspaper is the only organisation that understands in real time what is going on in the world, in general and in Cayman in particular (“Editorial: The British clampdown on governance”). Case in point, the British takeover of the Turks and Caicos Islands because of a corrupt government is the right thing to do. The UK is not going to let their little territories cost them money and make them look foolish.

Interesting; Net News has boldly reported what the implications are to the Cayman Islands, even though all our political leaders are in denial. They are in denial of the fact that the UK does not want competition in financial markets with their institutions. Remember the spy incident? The UK is in a conflict of interest with their Overseas Territories that have built a reputation as a “corrupt playground for the rich, operated by US and UK financial wizards”, and Cayman is the fifth largest in the world.

Those days are gone. The world has changed and Cayman political leaders are in denial of that too. It’s okay for our fearless leader to get us on the white list, but without the veil of secrecy what’s it all about? He is trying to do something which is a good thing, and we know he can’t do it by himself.

The only way forward is for Cayman to have internal self government to truly secure their financial position in the world. The UK is out to put any roadblock to competition with financial products that they feel belong to them. If they have to hammer Cayman with Turks and Caicos, so be it. They are still colonial masters. The time has come to fish or cut bait. Hopefully, a true leader will emerge and lead the way to growth, opportunity and prosperity.

Albert Jackson
