 First Governor of the Cayman Islands and 90 year-old decorated War Veteran Athelstan Long CMG, CBE and eight-year-old Will Roberts are seen at Foster’s, Countryside Shopping Village seeking donations and handing out the symbolic poppies
A parade by uniformed detachments and the traditional offering of wreaths will form part of the annual Remembrance Day homage to fallen war veterans this Sunday.
The ceremony takes place from 10:45 am on Harbour Drive in front of the Cenotaph that is located in Elmslie Memorial Church grounds. Members of the public should be in place by 10.30 a.m. Limited seating is available.
His Excellency the Governor, Stuart Jack, CVO; the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP as Deputy Premier; Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Kurt Tibbetts, and Cayman Islands Veterans Association President Capt. Dale Banks will all participate, as will other officials and veterans.
The event will also include two minutes of silence at 11:00 am and the sounding of the Last Post in remembrance of all who have sacrificed their lives in wars.
Parade participants will be detachments from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Veterans, Girls Brigade, Scouts, Cadet Corps and Lions Clubs.
Explaining the significance of the event, Veteran Graham Walker noted ”the war to end all wars, ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of the year, 1918. Services of remembrance soon started to be held on that anniversary in many of the countries that suffered.
An Annual Poppy Fundraising Appeal held to support veterans in Cayman, was officially launched with a symbolic presentation of the first poppy to the Governor H.E Stuart Jack on 25 October.
During the Fundraising Appeal, poppies are made available to the public at the entrances to supermarkets and at schools and offices.
Young and old help distribute poppies in remembrance of fallen soldiers and seek donations from the public in aid of the Poppy Appeal. All proceeds go to assist the members of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association. |
