Digicel Cayman says it has responded to the disaster in the Sister Islands by working on a number of relief activities with the Government’s Hazard Management (HMCI) office.

The company’s immediate action was spearheaded by its technical team in air-transporting much needed supplies to the Sister Islands, mitigating the effects of the devastation and providing assistance and comfort to the people.

The items delivered by local helicopter service included food, water, solar chargers, batteries and later generators to the HMCI.

“Digicel expresses its sympathy, support and prayers for the people of the Cayman Islands having suffered the devastation of Hurricane Paloma most recently, and Hurricane Ivan previously,” Digicel CEO Victor Corcoran said.

“Digicel believes in the resilience of the people of the Cayman Islands, and we know that with strong support, the Islands will return to normalcy and an even better quality of life.

“It is this resilience, strive for the best and unbeatable appreciation for life that has made us the success that we are as a nation. Support the Sister Islands – text your contribution to a better future.”

Digicel said it reinforced the value of reliable communication services and excellent customer service to facilitate contact between loved ones after a disaster, when the company immediately mobilized its engineers to fly into the disaster zone, restoring network service and repairing all physical damage to its infrastructure in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman within 24 hours.

The company has extended communication capabilities for customers by crediting $5 to every Digicel customer that is connected to its cell sites in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

In addition to Digicel’s Level 1 Disaster Response Actions, the company has launched a public appeal for support and unified assistance through the Digicel “Sister Islands” SMS Texting Fund.

Members of the public are able to make contributions to the recovery effort by texting “sister islands” to 5151. Digicel has pledged to match every $1 for every text sent to 5151. Each text costs $1.
