When Red Bay Primary School performs the play ‘Cindy Cayman Cinderella’ this week, they will be entertaining for a good cause.
Part of the proceeds from the play, to be performed Wednesday and Friday, 10 and 12 December, at 7:30 pm at the Mary Miller Hall in Red Bay, will go towards helping Cayman Brac.
“It is our way of giving back,” said Red Bay Primary’s music teacher and writer of the play, Patricia Bent.
“Last year we did Scrooge and it was a success, but we only had one showing. So this year with Cindy Cayman Cinderella we decided to have two,” said Ms Bent.
Noting that the children took the play seriously from the auditions to callbacks, and have been rehearsing since October, director and year two teacher Layla Scott applauded their effort. “The children fall right into character so it wasn’t hard to direct them at all.”
“We have characters in the play that I am sure people will like, for example we have a bad guy named Ivan and the fairy god mother is also very different than the Cinderella story,” said Ms Bent.
“The children love to be onstage,” said Ms Scott. But apart from the play being a fun experience, she added, “They get exposure to the arts and it is also a teamwork activity that enhances their literacy skills.”
What’s more, Ms Bent explained, through the play the children have learnt about promotion and advertising, “They ask to help and want to go around and hand out flyers and let people know about the play.”
With tickets almost sold out for Wednesday’s showing, Ms Bent is encouraging families to come out and watch.
“We want everybody to come out and, not trying to give the play away, all I can say is that there is a good lesson to be learnt from watching it.” |
