The Cayman Islands’ rock station, 96.5 Cayrock, is reaching listeners from around the globe via
the internet.

All the way from the Arctic Circle three former residents of Cayman have been tuning into the station online.

After working in the restaurant industry for many years in Cayman, Randy Burns, Tony Allenbrand and Nelson Dicipulo recently moved to the territory of Nunavut, Canada. The loyal listeners are living about 150 miles from Cambridge Bay in the Arctic Circle, where they are losing almost 10 hours of sunlight a day. In a few weeks time, the sun will not rise for almost a month.

“We listen to 96.5 Cayrock because Tony, Nelson and I were residents there until recently. I lived in Cayman for 10 years in the late 80s and 90s and just finished a six-year stint,” Mr Burns said.

“While there we were all avid listeners of 96.5 Cayrock so it’s like bringing a piece of Cayman with us. I plan on returning next year, but in the meantime it’s great to listen to 96.5 Cayrock, bridging the distance between me and Cayman.”

For the past few years, online streaming of radio has become increasingly popular, especially among those in the workforce and living abroad. This newfound popularity has made it a key tool for broadcasting networks to attract international audiences. Worldwide, online streaming has increased 30 percent in the past year alone, according to industry sources. A service of this kind makes it convenient for residents of Cayman who are living abroad to stay up to date with what is happening on the Island, 96.5 Cayrock said in a press release.

“DMS Broadcasting is proud to be able to bring an online streaming service to its loyal listeners at home and those abroad who want to stay in touch,” said DMS Broadcasting Network Promotions and Marketing Manager Phil Vinciullo.

“We are ecstatic that we have reached fans all the way in the freezing Arctic Circle, and are looking forward to providing entertainment for many more listeners abroad.”
