This week’s sports person is McAndy Thomas, a footballer and an inmate at the Northward prison.

Initially McAndy was not a footballer but as he developed his exercise program in prison he decided to try out the game.

McAndy started playing for the prison football team Transformers back in 2003, the same year they joined the Master’s Football League.

After a couple of seasons the team joined the five-a-side League at King’s Sports Centre.

McAndy who is also the captain of the Transformers says that football is very relaxing. “It is not only a form of exercise but it can be translated as a way of life since there are professional players who get income from the game,” Moving from simply watching and liking the game, McAndy is now learning and playing with a passion.

The Captain who is serving a life sentence in Northward prison, refers to football as a rehabilitative sport that one could use to better themselves as human beings.

Mc Andy says that the future of the game in the Cayman Islands is big and should it receive the necessary support by government and the business community the country would realize its dormant potential.

The player congratulates the coaches and mangers who have sacrificed greatly to ensure that football succeeds in the Cayman Islands.

The Northward Club Manager, Sharon Lamb-Titcombe says that sport could be used to prepare the inmates to return to the community. She said Mc Andy is an example of an inmate who has been reforming thanks to sport.
