Cayman connection
NEW YORK, USA: TPM Café, April 15, 2009 – It’s Tax Day. Millions of Americans will be racing to the post office to make that midnight deadline. Many plan on protesting at a variety of locations. “Tea bagging” has become an “in-your-face” statement to the government. WE ARE NOT PAYING TAXES! But in reality, the “tea baggers” are amateur hour when it comes to taxes. The REAL anti-tax people have the Caymans on their minds.
You see off-shore banks hold a lot of money for both very rich individuals and very rich corporations. They keep this money out of the continental US to avoid paying taxes on it. So while you stress about your last minute tax filing or you find that “tea bagging” leaves you hoarse, think relaxing thoughts about some time in the island sun. Think about Ugland House.
Ugland House is located in the Cayman Islands. This seemingly small five story building houses over 18,857 corporate entities. (And you thought your office was too crowded.) Most of these “offices” are in reality a PO box for mail. But the money that they are NOT paying should really annoy those of us who ARE paying our taxes.
So when you are done complaining about paying your taxes, when you have had your “fill” of “tea bagging”; call your Congressman and Senator. Even if you disagree with most of the President’s proposals, tell them that you support the efforts of the President to shut these tax havens down. Why should 84 out of the top 100 American based corporations pay less tax than you just because they have a Cayman Connection?
Post cards from the Cayman Islands
COLUMBUS, USA: The Columbus Dispatch, April 15, 2009 – Rallies from both sides of the political spectrum are planned today in Columbus to mark Tax Day, the deadline to file federal income-tax returns. Americans for Prosperity, ShotsontheHouse.com, various college groups and various community groups are planning a rally at the Ohio Statehouse starting at 6 p.m. to “combat reckless local, state, and government spending.”
Meanwhile, Ohio PIRG, ProgressOhio and other activists plan a rally at the main post office from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. “to show their support for President Barack Obama’s plan to restore fairness to the tax code by closing offshore tax havens for large corporations.” Activists plan to hand out “wish you were here” post cards from the Cayman Islands, which they describe as “a prominent corporate tax shelter.” |
