Commentary: A safety net
US social security is actually a group of several different plans operating under one name. Social Security’s old age/survivor benefit called OAS, 10.5% tax, is small compared to the same amount of money invested in a diversified pension account.
The national disability insurance DI 1.9% tax, isn’t too bad in terms of payout but the plan also includes a little-known provision that taxes away 100% of your earnings while you receive payments. Private disability insurance carries no such penalty.
As is true with so many of these schemes, you really wind up paying twice: once for an inefficient government minimum then again for a private plan to get the job done. There are no guarantees even from government - just ask California. I’d rather take my chances with
private entities. - John Haubrich

Calls for a merger of Pirates Week and Batabano Carnival
Change Pirates Week back to the last weekend in October. Let's get all the people back that used to come every year for Pirates Week. It is held too close to Thanksgiving for many States people to come. - Sherry Cowell

• Merger is a splendid idea. This is having the cake and eating it too. Now all we have to do is see some leadership to make it happen. We can't throw out the baby with the bath water with policies that hurt our small country. We need all we can get for the betterment of our country. Make it happen. - Albert Jackson

• Heritage Week might work but please don't discard the pirate theme. Take your time, it’s a fun week and I don't see any wrong message. There are hundreds of high schools in the US with the pirate mascot. Poteau, Oklahoma Pirates for one. Also, Johnny Depp’s "Pirates of the Caribbean" are very popular movies. Their ratings are evidently pretty good, as they keep showing them. - Bill J. Pierce, Poteau, Okla, USA

New Chair for Port Authority
How about building a small port in West Bay for one ship and a larger one for about two or three ships in George Town? That way both sides of the island will get business. - Andrew Banks
