Residents of Windward Road, Newlands, the community where the fatal shooting of Fabian Reid took place, were recently interviewed when Royal Cayman Islands Police Service staged a walk through the Bodden Town district recently.

According to Superintendent Marlon Bodden, the police were canvassing the area for people who would have more evidence than was gathered during their investigations.

Police say Fabian Reid was shot three times by three masked men on 13 October, as he was reversing his car out of a home in Newlands. His female passenger was also shot once in the leg.

Police are convinced the murder is gang related.

“We are giving a chance to the community to give information of what would have happened on the night when the shooting occurred,” Superintendent Bodden said.

“It is possible that we may get to any individuals that may have seen the victims before, during or after the shooting,” he said.

Mr Bodden noted that it was customary for the police to conduct walk-throughs when doing investigations of high profile crimes.

“Moreover, such an effort goes in line with neighbourhood policing where we seek to reassure the community that they had our support and we needed theirs too,” he said.

Most of those interviewed during the walk through, were residents leaving night classes at both the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) and the nearby International College of the Cayman Islands.

Most persons interviewed said they felt uncomfortable driving through the area at night.

“We don’t feel safe any more,” one Windward Road resident told the police.

Another female resident said she was terrified by the incident, and expressed the need for a strong police presence in the community, until peace and tranquility in the area was restored. Police officers assured her that the RCIPS will dispatch their Family Support Unit to consider her case.

Mr Bodden said that he was happy with the response of various individuals whom he said were appreciative to see police in the area. The walkthrough was conducted to coincide with the two-week anniversary of the shootings.
