A group of kids are getting lessons in self-defence and discipline at an after-school Martial arts programme called “Mighty Kids Training for Success” being held at George Hicks High School in George Town. The programme is a continuation of the Olympic Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do School started by Master Graham.
The programme is geared towards youth seven through sixteen years and is being run by Master Ian Richards. The classes are scheduled each Tuesday and Thursday 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm in the gymnasium of George Hicks High School.
“We want to instill a strong sense of discipline and self awareness into our youth. Tae Kwon Do is also a programme that teaches kids to deal with physical encounters while promoting confidence,” said Master Ian Richards III who is a third Dan Black belt.
“Tae Kwon Do is based on the tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and an indomitable spirit,” he said.
Master Richards noted that the most fundamental part of learning the discipline of Tae Kwon is the fact that it will teach students a way of life.
“It teaches students how not to be abusive or violent and how to become a productive member of society.”
Master Richards also said that the discipline of Tae Kwon Do is an excellent way to balance schoolwork and spare time while having fun.
“The discipline that we are trying to instill is for our children to be role models and to show them how to lead by example,” he said.
Master Richards said that the discipline aspect of Tae Kwon Do has its origins in a military background.
“Tae Kwon Do is a hand and foot martial arts which was founded by General Choi in Korea. Training was mandatory for all soldiers,” he said.
“Tae Kwon Do helps to build character and it also helps our youth to work better under pressure,” he explained.
Master Richards said that the training that you receive as a youth would follow you throughout your life. “It teaches you how to be a team leader and at the end of the day it gives you a reward system as you move from belt to belt.”
“It gives you something to strive for and it provides a strong sense of value,” he said.
Master Richards said that the discipline that the kids receive would also help to achieve whatever goals you set in all areas of life.
“Tae Kwon Do is not just about kicking, fighting and punching, Master Richards said. “Students are also required to learn the history, the tenets and also the creed of the sport. It is also about the physical and mental conditioning and it requires study,” he said. |
