A race designed to challenge anyone, from weekend runners to seasoned marathoners, those compassionate souls with a little adrenaline in their veins, will want to sign on for the “Off the Beaten Track” trail run the last Sunday in February.
Organizers Krys & Associates, a local insolvency and forensic accounting firm, and the law firm, Stuarts, will not disclose the 50-kilometre course until the week before the event, but it will mimic the grueling “Marathon des Sables” ultra-distance, annual race across the sands of Morocco. The purpose is not punishment, but charity.
“The goal is to make this a fun and social sporting event that benefits a great cause,” said Krys & Associates’ CEO Ken Krys, who last year participated in the Marathon des Sables, considered the most grueling foot race in the world lasting six days over 145 miles.
The cause is Facing Africa— which depends primarily on the Marathon des Sables for funding—Is a charity dedicated to helping the sufferers of Noma, a severe, flesh-eating disease that afflicts young children of the poverty stricken and the malnourished who live in Nigeria and Ethiopia. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 140,000 new cases erupt annually, of which 90% are fatal without early intervention. The survivors, left with grossly disfiguring holes in their faces, require extensive reconstruction, sometimes even to restore the ability to eat.
“There are a great many runners here in Cayman,” said Mr Krys, “and I urge all of them to come out and support this unique event. The team aspect allows runners of all levels to participate, while experienced marathoners can choose to run the event individually.”
Many of Cayman’s most reputable financial and professional services firms are signing up their six-person teams for the ultra-marathon that will begin at 6:30 am on Sunday, 28 February. Individuals are also welcome to enter. There will be a nominal prize for the “winning” team with a BBQ and medal distribution ceremony at Calico Jack’s following the race.
The funds raised through the sponsorship fees all will go to Facing Africa to help pay for the transport costs of teams of up to five surgeons, their medical assistants and the purchase of medical supplies to Africa. Each trip costs an average of $100,000.
Additional sponsors for this event include dms Management, Digicel, Ogier, MCS, GNC, Fosters, Progressive, Close Brothers, Maples, Mourant and Tower Marketing. Individual donations or additional corporate sponsorship can be arranged through the website www.offthebeatentrack.ky | | | | Reads : 1098 |
