Books & Books hosts local author

Guy Harrison

Local author Guy Harrison will be at Books & Books on Friday, March 19, for a book signing and discussion about his most recent book, Race and Reality: What Everyone Should Know About our Biological Diversity.

Race, a controversial subject with even scientists disagreeing over its definition, is the topic of Race and Reality, which makes the case that nature did not impose race classifications upon the world’s people, rather we created them.

Harrison draws on scholarly research, interviews with experts and laypersons, and his extensive travels, to make a compelling case for human unity based on honesty and science, rather than hope and optimism.

“Anthropologists—the people who know people best—have been saying for decades that races do not exist,” says Harrison. “Unfortunately, very few people take university anthropology courses and read anthropology journals. Biological diversity is real, of course, but biological race categories are nonsense— dangerous nonsense.” Race and Reality leans heavily upon science, but is written with the layperson in mind, exploring such topics as the story of prehistoric migrations, the European conquest of New World peoples, love and sex, health, sports and intelligence.

Mr Harrison, who holds a degree in history and anthropology, wrote his first book, 50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God, in 2008. His second, Race and Reality, has earned strong praise from the academic community. Dr David Grusky, professor of sociology at Stanford University, says, “even those who think they know it all about race and racial classification will come away changed.”

Mr Harrison is a columnist for The Observer on Sunday newspaper and a part-time science and history lecturer at Montessori By The Sea. He enjoys traveling and has visited more than 25 countries across six continents.

He lives in Lower Valley with his wife and children, and his books are available for purchase at Books & Books.
