North Side students learn to 'Stay Safe''

Published on Friday, May 9, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Students and teachers of Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 of North Side Primary and police
officers look on as Tarrie Smith (centre) shows off her awards.

Tarrie Smith, a Year 5 student at North Side Primary School, emerged as the winner of her school’s “Stay Safe” competition. Students from years 4, 5 and 6 participated in the contest.

The initiative was organised by North Side Neighbourhood Policing Officer Mark Miller.

Some of the topics covered were “the correct side of the road to ride on”; “the use of hand signals when riding”; “always wear a helmet”; “the type of clothing to wear whist riding at night”; “ensure lights, brakes etc function correctly”; “to always wear seatbelts whilst in a vehicle”.

The children were then asked to draw a picture of the North Side Community Policing Vehicle. Tarrie was announced the winner and she received a trophy courtesy of Acting Inspector Ian Yearwood.

“It is always a pleasure going into the schools and meeting with the children. Helping them stay safe is one of our priorities and I hope that the children have learned some good tips in how to stay safe in their
neighbourhoods,” PC Miller said.

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling Crime Stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.
