Opinion: Guiding the younger generation

Published on Friday, May 9, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

There are mounting concerns within the community of the Sister Islands, and more so in Cayman Brac, about young people visiting bars and at times purchasing or being seen consuming alcoholic beverages.

With the responsibilities associated with parenting, it is also fair to say that it takes a community to raise a child and, on the numerous occasions that young persons are seen in these locations, one has to wonder, therefore, if the adults present are neglecting their roles in society in nurturing the young.

Without undermining the effectiveness of the RCIPS, the question still looms in the minds of many whether they are doing enough to deal with the problem, which unquestionably exists, based on the numerous reports that have been made to the police as well as the Department of Children and Family Services.

Others should not have to decipher whether or not the parents are aware of the fact that their children are in locations where they ought not to be, but should be willing to take a proactive approach in guiding the youth to become better citizens in this dynamic world.

These concerns intensified a few months ago when residents reported to the police that young people were at a bar purchasing beverages. Only a few hours later the same group was involved in an accident that could have been fatal.

Residents complain of the police being tardy in their duty but, as responsible adults were also present at the same location, this accident could easily have been prevented by the adults being resolute in their actions. Adults are responsible for guiding the youth and for their positive development in life. Let us be the leaders of change; let us guide the youth of today to be better citizens tomorrow.
