The Cayman Islands Athletic Association resumes its local track and field season with the staging of the 2008 World Athletics Day at the West Bay Primary School Field on Saturday, 17 May, starting at 9:00am.

World Athletics Day is an initiative of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) which promotes athletics with youth worldwide. Over 140 countries participated in 2007 in the event, which has been held in early May across the globe for more than 10 years.

This year’s event includes two age categories; youth athletes (born 1991 and 1992) and the second will be a school based age grouping (born 1993, 1994 and 1995).

As in past years all event winners are entered into a draw to win a trip to the Herculis Meeting in Monaco, taking place in July. Free T-shirts to commemorate the day will be handed out to participants on a “first come first serve” basis.

The Athletics Day events will feature event for athletes aged 6-7, 8-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17 and Open category. Entry Forms can be collected from National Coaches Kenrick Williams and Tyrone Yen as well as Coaches Jerry Harper and Harcourt Wason, members of the CIAA Executive, officers from the Hy-Tech Tigers Club, Mustang Track Club, Brac Athletic Club and Peak Performance Track Club.

The Meet will signal the restart of the local season, which will continue in the following weeks at the refurbished Truman Bodden Stadium, starting with the Truman Bodden Track Meet on 31 May, the Inter-Primary Championships, 5 and 6 June, the CUC National Junior and Senior Championships, 21 June, and the Cayman National Bank Relays, 28 June.

These Meets will provide the basis for the selection of a number of National Teams to represent the Islands internationally in July. National Teams will participate in an International Primary Meet in Turks & Caicos Island for athletes in the Under 9, Under 11 and Under 13 categories, The Caribbean Union Of Teachers Meet in Tortola, BVI, CAC Juniors, World Juniors, CAC Seniors, NACAC U-23, culminating in the Beijing Olympics in August.

Registration Forms for the remainder of the local Season can be obtained from National Coaches Kenrick Williams and Tyrone Yen as well as Coaches Jerry Harper and Harcourt Wason, members of the CIAA Executive, officers from the Hy-Tech Tigers Club, Mustang Track Club, Brac Athletic Club and Peak Performance Track Club.
