G and C Gardening takes a shot on goal

The Digicel Co-Ed Five-A-Side matches last weekend began and ended with shutouts. Five games in all were played at the King’s Sports Centre.

Game one on Friday, 9 May was a match between the number three-ranked G and C Gardening and seventh-place KPMG Kickers. The G and C Gardening team destroyed the Kickers 9-0, with goals scored by four different players.

Leading scorer Raquel Miller, with four goals, could not be stopped. Teammates Deibys Cordero - who is 11th in the league with seven goals scored - and Yeudi Prado had two each, and Luis Medina scored once, also putting his total for the season at seven.

So many whistles were blown in game two, it sounded like a football match in Europe.

The first place South Coast Sharks came in undefeated against Maples and Calder who were vying for a major upset. But Maples and Calder, holding down sixth place, could not compete and lost 6-2.

The Sharks had two goals apiece from Willard Robinson and Heather Pierre, and one each from Thomas Wood and Theron Wood. Theron Wood sits seventh in goal standings with 11.

Maples and Calder’s two goals came from Jeremy Seymour and Raymond Grant. Mr Seymour’s goal, coupled with Chris Ebanks’ failure to score, helped close the gap between first and second place in the standings.

Three games were played Sunday, with the first match between the Islanders and Citco Ballers.

The Islanders climbed above a .500 won-loss record with a 10-3 win. The Ballers’ loss kept them winless and in last place.

Richard Grant had to be the player of the day with five goals for the Islanders, which bumped him up the scorers’ standings. Teammates Sandra McLaughlin had two, and Immer Carter, Ormond Moore, Rene Carter, scored one goal each. Immer Carter sits in fifth on the goals list.

For the Citco Ballers, Carlos Ebanks kept the team from a shutout by scoring two goals and staying among the top 10 scorers; Nicholas Tibbetts found the goal for one.

In the next game on Sunday, second place Walkers won 4-1 over eighth place JBS Eagles.

Bobeth O’Garro, two goals, and Rebecca Bush, two, were the only scorers for Walkers. Chris Ordolis scored the Eagles’ only goal.

Samson and McGrath shut out Budget Barracudas 3-0 for the final game of the weekend, with two goals by Zoenief Walker and one by James McElvanna.

Samson and McGrath now holds fourth place, tied at six wins and two losses with G and C Gardening, but ahead on points. The Budget Barracudas sole one win keeps them just out of last place.

With the playoffs beginning in June, fans can be sure these next few weeks should offer some can’t-miss games.
