Cayman ASC advances to finals of CIFA under-16 competition

Published on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Cayman ASC dug deep to dismiss Cayman Brac 4-0 on penalties to advance to the finals of the Admiral Under-16 Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) competition Saturday, 10 May, at the St Ignatius Catholic School playing field.

Cayman ASC will now face Future SC in the final, at a date and venue to be announced.

Future blanked FC International 6-0 in their semis played last week.

The Cayman Brac team took the lead with a goal in the 10th minute from Chase Miller, ending the first half 1-0.

In the second half, lanky forward Andre Douglas equalised in the 44th minute, after several attempts at goal, to give Cayman ASC hope of reaching the final.

Mr Miller put Cayman Brac ahead again in the 77th minute. The celebrations were put on hold, however, when Mr Douglas netted two minutes later to end regulation time at 2-2.

No goals were scored during extra time with man of the match, goalkeeper Tevin Jones, like a wall, thwarting the chances created by the Cayman Brac outfit led by Mr Miller.

Then came the penalty shoot-out, which ended 4-0. Christopher Godfrey, Emanuel Brown, Giovannei Ordonez and Andre Douglas all converted their penalty kicks for the winners while Kodie Scott and Nicholas Scott missed the net and Tevin Jones saved Silvio Antunez’s effort.

Ernie “Gillie” Seymour, Coach of Cayman ASC, was happy about the victory and praised the Cayman Brac team for a great game.

“The Cayman Brac team was disciplined and they played well, I take my hat off to the coach, Mitchum Sanford; his team put up a great fight.”

“I will face Future in the finals; until the date is announced I will embark on preparing my team for this encounter,” Mr Seymour said.

Cayman Brac Coach Mitchum Sanford praised his team for its performance and pointed out that he could not have asked God for better players.

“I thank God for my team; He could not have given me a better group. Victory was snatched away from us twice but that’s the nature of the game. Many thanks to CIFA and Sports Association of the Sister Islands (SASI) for making this competition a reality and to our sponsors.”
