The Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) announced this week that Janeil Sterling will intern this summer at the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC).

In July, Ms Sterling graduates from the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) with her Associate’s degree. In September, she will continue her education at the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre, located conveniently on the UCCI Campus.

“It is very thrilling to have the opportunity to be educated hands on about Cayman’s marine environment and learning from brilliant scientists right here in Cayman,” Ms Sterling said. “This will be valuable information and education that I can then share with my friends, fellow students and the rest of Cayman’s community.”.

With an extremely full calendar through the summer, the Little Cayman Research Centre said it welcomes Ms Sterling’s enthusiasm, dedication and hard work ethic for the 4-5 weeks she will be in Little Cayman starting 12 July.

“We will have scientists and students back to back all summer conducting research and being educated,” said CCMI’s Field Station Manager Jonathan Clamp.

“In many instances, a group will be arriving the same day another group is leaving. Basically, it will be an exciting and productive summer and we appreciate having Janeil to be on hand to help out.”

Ms Sterling is CCMI’s summer Administrative and Community Outreach Intern and will take part in the daily administrative and outreach activities during our busiest season. “The idea behind our internships is to provide valuable work experience for young students who are highly motivated and who have leadership skills,” Mr Clamp said.

“Janiel will have an opportunity to learn how a scientific and education field station operates by actually doing the work. In addition to providing office support and checking students and scientists in and out, she will help with hosting tours for island guests, will organize our guest speakers at the research centre and will circulate news and information to the community.

“We have three other volunteer interns this summer, a Field Station Operations and Teaching Assistant Intern who helps with maintaining the physical facility and who will also assist with teaching CCMI resident education programs, a Field Research Intern who will assist with the summer research projects, and a Marine Operations Intern who helps with all waterfront and diving activities.”
