In conjunction with the Department of Environment (DoE), the Watersports Committee of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) Watersports Committee coordinated the Earth Day Reef Watch Survey.
Divers and snorkellers were asked to fill out surveys about marine life they saw during their dives in which DOE compiles and enters in its database of Reef Watch Results stretching back to 1997. Participants returning a completed survey received a free Earth Day cloth bag or T-shirt. The following dive operators participated and collectively produced over 300 surveys: Deep Blue Divers, Divers Down, Divetech; Don Fosters Dive, Eden Rock Diving Centre, Lobster Pot Dive Center, Ocean Frontiers, Off the Wall Divers, Red Sail Sports, Sunset Divers, Wall to Wall Divers and Pirates Point on Little Cayman.
In addition to the many activities that the CITA Watersports members hosted to promote environmental awareness, following are many more Go Green initiatives that other CITA sector members have implemented to protect Cayman’s unique environment.
Seven member properties will serve as pilots in the CEPTS – Cayman Islands Environmental Project for the Tourism Sector, program which is a joint initiative between the DoT and the DoE and the tourism private sector for improved environmental performance within the industry. The properties are Compass Point, Sunshine Suites, Cobalt Coast, Little Cayman Beach Resort, Southern Cross Club, Pirate’s Point, and Brac Reef Beach Resort. |
