With her regal composure, Tashaena Young won Best Gown

Drawing the biggest crowd in years, the Aston Rutty Centre came alive as five talented young ladies competed for the Miss Teen Cayman Brac title on Saturday, 10 May.

Vanessa Scott, Tashaena Young, Mya Dunkley, Zorina McCoon and Samantha McLaughlin took to the stage to showcase the many facets of Brac beauty. In the talent parade, the audience caught the beat of Vanessa’s Steel Pan music, enjoyed the dance number by Tashaena, emotionally connected with Mya’s rendition of an inspirational song, was moved by Zorina’s version of Christina Aguilera’s Reflection and savoured the humour of the monologue by Samantha.

Apart from modeling casual wear and parading in international costumes, the girls mesmerized the crowd as they sashayed down the runway in their formal wear before impressing everyone with the ease and grace at which they answered their questions during the interview portion.

Suspense mounted as the evening went on and fans continued to cheer on their favourites. But at the end of the night, the crown was won by Zorina McCoon, whose wit and charm engaged the judges during the pre-pageant interview and earned her the Awareness Award. Zorina was also given the Miss Photogenic and People’s Choice awards.

First Runner-up went to Tashaena Young, who also got Best Gown while Samantha McLaughlin who won Best Talent was awarded Second Runner-up. Mya Dunkley went home with the Cicely Rose Conolly Community Spirit Award and was voted Miss Congeniality by her co-contestants.

Miss Teen Cayman Brac not only brings to the fore the beauty and talents of teen Brackers, but also brings out in young people a sense of responsibility toward their community.

The pageant was possible because different sectors in the community came together to make it happen. In her vote of thanks, Committee Chair Ventisha Conolly said, “Miss Teen Cayman Brac 2008 was about Caymanians helping Caymanians.”
